Articles from TravelPriceCompare.com: Disrupted Flights - Passenger Rights
There is a lot more that passengers in EU can do if their flight schedules
are cancelled or rescheduled. Most of the times passengers aren't aware of their
legal entitlements or service providers act in a smarter way by denying those
rights. The following broad areas can provide basic information to passengers in
EU:
• In cases where flight has been cancelled within seven days of departure,
passengers are entitled for a full refund. As per Air Transport User's Council,
AIU such refund is payable within seven days of departure date and applies to
any parts of the tickets not used. In case where passenger agrees to be
re-routed, airline is liable to pay cost of transfer if they are not obliged to
transit you to the original destination.
• In cases where transit flights are cancelled and the passenger does not
wish to continue with the remaining journey, reimbursement of the total ticket
becomes the liability of the airliner. They would have to pay the passenger
within seven days inclusive of free back to the source.
• As per the EU regulations, passengers are not entitled for the reimbursements
for car rentals and fortified hotel fares.
• Passengers will not be compensated for reasons beyond the control of
airliner including weather disruptions.
• Passengers might get reimbursements on food, water and other basic
amenities in case of long on ground delays. It would depend on a case to case
basis and passengers might also be given the arrangements to make two free
telephone calls, fax, email and an overnight hotel along with free airport
transfers if need be.
